Akutan, Alaska has a population of 713 and is located in Alaska's
Aleutians East county. The city is about 761 miles away from Anchorage
and 1,917 miles from Seattle. Akutan is located on one of the Krenitzin
Islands of the Fox Island group. Akutan lies in the maritime climate

Akutan began in 1878 as a trading port for the Western Fur
& Trading Company and a fur storage. Later a commercial cod
fishing and processing business was established. A Russian Orthodox
church and a school were built in 1878. Akutan residents were evacuated
to the Ketchikan area by the U.S. government after the Japanese
attacked Unalaska in June 1942. The village was re-established in
1944 and incorporated in 1979. 16.4% of the population are Alaska
Native or part Native.
The majority of the population in Akutan are employed with
commercial fish processing - mainly for cod, crab, pollock and fish
meal. Subsistence foods include salmon, seal, herring, clams, halibut,
wild cattle and game birds.
The only transportation means into Akutan are boats and amphibious
aircraft. There is no harbor, but there is a dock. The daily air
service is provided from nearby Unalaska. During winter months the
